The Wednesday Weekly – Issue 131 – 5 Games Where You Don’t Have To Play The Whole Series

Some games are part of a larger series and require you to play through the whole thing to make sure that you don’t miss anything. There are a few around, however, that you can play without having to go through the entire series. Of course, playing through a whole series is generally good to do anyway – that way you can fully understand and appreciate the customs and lore of each. Here are five examples of games you can play without needing to play the whole series.

1) Grand Theft Auto (any)

Each Grand Theft Auto so far has been it’s own stand-alone story, even the extra content that was released as expansions to IV. You get the odd reference to former characters from previous entries, but there’s no real need to have played the games that came before.

2) Dishonored: Death of the Outsider

I’ll just start this entry by saying that if you don’t play the first two Dishonored games, you’re missing out. They’re great, but not necessary to understand what’s going on in this one. Billie has her own weapons, powers and story. Again, there’s the occasional reference here and there to it’s predecessors, but nothing major.

3) Assassin’s Creed (almost any)

I’ve said almost any here, because to get the full Ezio experience, you’d need to play II, Brotherhood and Revelations, but apart from that you can play almost any of the games without having to play through the whole series to get a feel of what’s happening.

4) Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

This is another example of missing out if you skipped past the first four main games, but there’s no need to play them to get what you’re doing in this one. We’ve met the two main characters in this game in the main series, but we didn’t really find out too much about them that you’ll need to know here.

5) The Legend of Zelda (any)

Now, I am aware that some of the Zelda games are sequels to others, but they all work as stand alone adventures too. You’ll probably come across the odd reference to former games (as with those above), but they’ll not be too major.
