The Wednesday Weekly – Issue 113 – 5 Great Reasons To Play Video Games

Everyone has different reasons for playing video games, and some of those overlap between people. The ones considered most obvious (they’re fun, we enjoy them etc.) will not be featured here. That said, here are five great reasons to play video games (that you probably already know).

1) They can be educational

I’ve mentioned at least once before that some games can teach us stuff (see Issue 97), so I won’t go crazy writing about it here. Assassin’s Creed Origins has a discovery mode so that you can learn about Ancient Egypt, while a lesser known Nintendo DS title called Learn with Pokémon: Typing Adventure helps you learn how to type. If you can find it, complete with the keyboard (that works with no other DS game!), it’s a nice addition to your collection.

2) They can improve hand-eye co-ordination

There are a lot of things that can help improve your hand-eye co-ordination in the world, and video games sits on that list. Pretty much every game will require you to press a certain button at a certain time to progress the story (or go in a certain story path), and rhythm games, like Guitar Hero, need you to be in time to make them play as they should.

3) Some games help you keep fit

This point really has the Nintendo Wii in mind, but it can apply to other games too. It’s just that most Wii games require you to be up and active to play them, particularly things like Wii Sports or Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. Pokémon GO required you to walk around in order to collect Pokémon in the real world, which is good for you too.

4) You can meet people from all over the map

No, not the game map. This was going to say World, but a lot of games now automatically put you on a server that is focused on your country or continent. You can change this of course, but I’ve never actually done it. Anyway, the point is, you can meet and play with people from almost anywhere, without having to actually leave home.

5) Anyone can play a game

It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you do to live, thrive and survive, but you can play a game! Whether it’s the latest top level release or a mobile game, pretty much anyone of any age can play a video game.

That’s this week’s list, but do you have a great reason for playing games that isn’t here? Leave a comment below!

Until next time, keep gaming!

I’d probably say I’d play games to get to spend time with my son ! That and football are really the only mum/son time we have these days (and when food is involved!).
